Les êtres humains de la Terre furent divisés en deux grands groupes, le "Lowell Empire" et la "Continental Confederation". À la date stellaire 201, les humains découvrirent que, dans la galaxie Heumann située à 4 700 années-lumière de la Terre, il existait des planètes adaptées à l'habitation humaine, à l'exception de l'absence d'oxygène. Les deux grands groupes lancèrent donc chacun leurs propres plans d'immigration vers des planètes extraterrestres et considérèrent que ce plan serait la clé déterminant la survie des deux camps.
