Grand Theft Auto es un videojuego de acción y aventura desarrollado por DMA Design y publicado por BMG Interactive. Es el primer título de la serie Grand Theft Auto y fue lanzado en noviembre de 1997 para MS-DOS y Microsoft Windows, en diciembre de 1997 para PlayStation y en octubre de 1999 para Game Boy Color. La narrativa del juego sigue a un criminal que asciende de estatus dentro del submundo del crimen a través de tres ciudades ficticias inspiradas en lugares reales. La jugabilidad se presenta desde una perspectiva cenital y transcurre en un entorno de mundo abierto en el que el jugador no está obligado a realizar misiones, aunque estas son necesarias para avanzar por los niveles.
