Grand Theft Auto est un jeu vidéo d'action-aventure développé par DMA Design et publié par BMG Interactive. Il s'agit du premier titre de la série Grand Theft Auto et il est sorti en novembre 1997 sur MS-DOS et Microsoft Windows, en décembre 1997 sur PlayStation et en octobre 1999 sur Game Boy Color. Le récit du jeu suit un criminel qui gagne en statut dans le milieu criminel à travers trois villes fictives inspirées de lieux réels. Le gameplay est présenté en vue de dessus et se déroule dans un environnement en monde ouvert où le joueur n'est pas obligé d'accomplir des missions, même si celles-ci sont nécessaires pour progresser dans les niveaux.
