Grand Theft Auto ist ein Action-Adventure-Videospiel, das von DMA Design entwickelt und von BMG Interactive veröffentlicht wurde. Es ist der erste Titel der Grand-Theft-Auto-Reihe und erschien im November 1997 für MS-DOS und Microsoft Windows, im Dezember 1997 für die PlayStation und im Oktober 1999 für den Game Boy Color. Die Handlung des Spiels folgt einem Kriminellen, der in der Unterwelt von drei fiktiven, von realen Orten inspirierten Städten aufsteigt. Das Spielgeschehen wird aus der Draufsicht dargestellt und findet in einer offenen Spielwelt statt, in der der Spieler keine Missionen absolvieren muss, obwohl sie für den Fortschritt durch die Level notwendig sind.
