Uncharted Waters es un juego en el que los capitanes jugadores buscan grandes rutas de vientos alisios y corrientes principales. La historia está ambientada a principios del siglo XVI. Fue lanzado para PC-88 en mayo de 1990.
En el primer juego de la serie, el jugador asume el papel de Leon Franco, el joven y ambicioso hijo de una familia noble caída en desgracia en Portugal. El objetivo del juego es restaurar la antigua gloria de la familia y cumplir los sueños de Leon. Solo están representadas tres naciones —Portugal, España y el Imperio Otomano—, aunque hay muchos puertos neutrales alrededor del mundo en los que el jugador puede "invertir" y así incorporarlos a la esfera de influencia de Portugal. Esto, junto con descubrir puertos y derrotar a otros mercaderes y piratas en batallas navales, aumenta la fama de Leon. Con mayor fama, Leon puede completar tareas para el rey de Portugal y obtener títulos de nobleza más altos.
