《三国志5》游戏是1995年底推出的，对应800×600的高解析度和精致的人物头像描写使人已经无法在画面上再做过多挑剔。全新加入的“历史事件动画”显示了光荣在游戏多媒体时代的大胆尝试，也让这款题材严肃的作品更具亲和力。
不过本作在技术上最大的强化之处其实是音乐和音效。从最初简单的模拟声到稍具音乐效果的MIDI音效，《三国志》系列在诞生后的十年时间里在音乐方面并没有多大建树，不过到了《三国志5》，随着CD音源的引入，一切都得到了根本性的改观。《三国志5》首次采用CD音源便邀请了著名作曲家服部隆之为游戏作曲，时而气势磅礴，时而清新悠扬，首次以立体声表现的《三国志5》给人带来的听觉冲击是视觉上的小小进化所无法企及的，以至于不少玩家至今依然将《三国志5》的音乐奉为历代最强！
