1925年、エドワード・カーンビーは前2作の調査で成功を収めた後、ジャーナリストから「超自然的な探偵」と呼ばれています。今回は、カリフォルニアのモハーヴェ砂漠にある小さなゴーストタウン「スローター・ガルチ」で映画製作チームの失踪を調査するよう依頼されます。失踪したクルーの中には、元の作品に登場するジェレミー・ハートウッドの姪、エミリー・ハートウッドも含まれています。エドワードは、町に呪いがかかっていることを発見し、悪党のカウボーイ、ジェッド・ストーンがクルーの失踪の原因であることを知ります。町には、手に銃を持った狙撃手や狂った鉱夫、血に飢えた迷える魂たちがひしめいており、エドワードは自らの力と知恵を駆使して彼らを退けなければなりません。
