「ダークシタデルの死王」 は、1996年9月3日に「ヘクスン」のためにリリースされた公式拡張パックです。3つのハブを含み、合計20の新しいシングルプレイヤーレベルと6つの新しいデスマッチレベルが特徴です。「ヘリティック」の「蛇のライダーの影」拡張パックとは異なり、店舗または郵送で購入する必要がありました。これは当時としては珍しく、ほとんどの有料拡張パックは新しいまたは改訂されたゲームプレイ要素を含んでいました。「ダークシタデルの死王」は、元のゲームと一緒にパッケージ化されることはなく、両方を別々に購入する必要があり、拡張パックは「ヘクスン」を既に所有していなければ機能しませんでした。この拡張パックには、最初は音楽が含まれておらず、音楽を完全に有効にするには、特別にリリースされたパッチ（通常「dkpatch」としてオンラインで見つかる）を適用する必要がありました。
