「マスター・オブ・オリオン II: アンタレスの戦い」は、スティーブ・バルシアとケン・バードによって設計され、シムテックスによって開発された宇宙を舞台にしたターン制ストラテジーゲームです。
ゲームの舞台となる時代よりもずっと前、非常に強力な二つの種族、オリオンとアンタランは、銀河の大部分を破壊する戦争を戦いました。勝利したオリオンは、アンタランを根絶するのではなく、彼らをポケット次元に閉じ込め、銀河を離れました。その際、彼らの故郷を守るために非常に強力なロボット戦艦、ガーディアンを残しました。
ゲームが始まってからしばらくして、アンタランは囚われの次元から脱出し、プレイヤーの植民地を攻撃するために次第に強力な艦隊を送り始め、守備艦と共にそれらを破壊した後、再び彼らの神秘的な領域へ消えていきます。
