『ライオン・キング』は、プレイヤーが主人公シンバを操作し、映画の出来事を進める横スクロール型のプラットフォームゲームです。ゲームの前半では、プレイヤーは子供のシンバを操作し、主に敵をジャンプで倒します。シンバの咆哮は補充可能なメーターを消費し、敵を驚かせたりパズルを解いたりするために使用できます。後半では、シンバが大人になり、 scratching、mauling、throw などのさまざまな攻撃技を獲得します。どちらの形態でも、シンバは体力がゼロになったり、底なしの穴や転がる岩などの即死の障害物に遭遇した場合、1ライフを失います。
