『三國志IV』は日本のコーエーが制作した『三國志』シリーズの中で画期的な作品です。操作システムは従来のキーボード操作を完全に廃止し、マウス操作に変更されました。ゲームのグラフィックもシリーズの前作に比べて大きく進化しました。しかし、ゲームの最大の変更点はキャラクターの設定です。キャラクターには従来の一般的な能力（数値属性）に加え、24種類の特別な能力が追加されました。キャラクターと君主との関係には血縁要素や隠れた君臣の相性関係が加わり、ゲームには強い人本主義的な色彩が見られます。軍事行動に関しては、主に三代のモデルを引き継ぎ、野戦と城戦の2つの部分に分かれています。城門を攻破した後、守備側に退路がない場合は兵力または武力決闘を選択できます。さまざまな策略の組み合わせがこの作品で重要な位置を占めています。全体として、これは非常に成功した戦略ゲームであり、『三國志』ファンからはシリーズの中で最もクラシックな作品として称賛されています。
