これは光栄が発売した『信長の野望』シリーズの第六作です。このゲームは1995年に日本国内で発売されるとすぐにTOP TENランキングに十数週登場し、その間に何度も首位を獲得しました。この作品は『信長の野望Ⅴ 霸王伝』と比べて大きな進歩があり、キャラクターのアイコンは大半が再描画され、性格がより際立ち、色彩もより調和が取れています。オープニングとエンディングのデザインも非常に美しく、アニメーションは少ないものの、史劇の雰囲気を良く演出しています。ゲームでは前作の平安楽土章、つまり信長の死去の章が減少し、桶狭間の合戦前における上杉謙信、武田信玄、北条氏康、毛利元就の壮年期の事が追加されました。これにより、前の版では登場しなかった北条氏綱や大内義隆なども天下を統一できるようになりました。各時代には数十の城が選択可能で、最大8人まで同時にプレイできます。
ゲームの規模は非常に大きく、213の城が存在しますが、200以上の城を攻めるために200以上の戦を行う必要はなく、一戦で一帯を制圧する方式です。さらに、7つの軍団を編成でき、家主が指揮する第一軍団を除き、軍団指令を通じて軍団長を割り当て、軍を調整して城を攻めたり土地を奪ったりすることができます。前作と比べて、戦争における鉄砲や大砲の威力は減少し、火器の射程が短くなり、騎兵の役割が強化されています。これにより、より歴史的な事実に即したものとなっています。他の面でも非常に細かく作り込まれており、武力、野望、政治力を増加させる宝物は三、四百種類も存在します。
