《大航海時代》は、日本のコーエー社が1990年に発売したシミュレーションゲームで、ロールプレイング要素も含まれています。本作は「大航海時代」シリーズの第一作です。
ゲームは、歴史上の15世紀から17世紀にかけて、ヨーロッパで始まり、後に世界中に影響を与えた「大航海時代」を背景にしています。プレイヤーはゲーム内の海洋や大陸で設定された任務を遂行します。本作のシナリオは1502年から始まります。
プレイヤーはポルトガルの若い没落貴族、リオン・ファレルとして設定されており、名誉を回復し、公女と結婚するという野心を抱き、船長として冒険に出ることを決意します。本作には3つの国、「ポルトガル」、「スペイン」、および「オスマン」が登場します。世界各地には多くの中立港が存在し、プレイヤーはこれらの港に「投資」を行い、投資した港をポルトガルの勢力範囲にすることができます。プレイヤーは港を発見したり、他の商隊や海賊と戦って打ち負かしたりすることで、リオンの名声を高めることができます。名声が上がることで、リオンはポルトガル国王からの命令を遂行し、さらなる名声を得ることができます。
