《大航海時代II》または《大航海時代：新しい地平線》は、このシリーズの名作であり、日本のゲーム制作会社KOEIの代表作の一つです。このゲームは東アジア地域で多くのプレイヤーを惹きつけ、《大航海時代》シリーズのその後の発展にしっかりとしたファン基盤を築きました。
《大航海時代II》は1994年に発売され、《大航海時代I》の続編です。ストーリーは非常に優れており、グラフィックやキャラクターデザインも当時としては素晴らしいものでした。また、菅野洋子が制作した音楽も非常に秀逸で、ゲーム操作はとても簡単です。
6人の主人公はそれぞれ異なる背景や目標を持ち、航海を続ける中で自らの名声を高めていきます。ゲーム全体のストーリーは旅の中で徐々にプレイヤーに明らかにされ、物語の進行は非常にオープンでマルチライン式です。ストーリーに沿わなくても無限の楽しみを得ることができる、これこそが《大航海時代II》の魅力です。
