作品内容描述一群太空人在宇宙中处理掉原先某颗小行星会撞击到地球的危机事件后；接着一行人意外发生被传送到未知星球里的状况。其中LucasArts母公司卢卡斯影业旗下的工业光魔负责了游戏里一些像电影般的场景效果，而曾在电影《终结者2：审判日》饰演液态金属机器人“T-1000”演员罗伯特·帕特里克也参与了作品里游戏男主角的配音。
以此游戏后续所改编的小说化书籍，则是由科幻作家艾伦·迪恩·佛斯特来撰写。
某日在婆罗洲的射电望远镜站台侦测到宇宙中某颗小行星有朝向地球撞击之迹象，之后NASA机构为了地球的安危派遣了一名有着丰富经历的太空人波士顿·洛（Boston Low）、女性冒险家玛姬·萝宾斯（Maggie Robbins）、来自德国的地质专家卢德格·布林克（Ludger Brink）等数名成员搭乘太空船前往该小行星上，计划利用核子武器所造成的冲击将小行星轨道给偏离地球。
在使用核子武器的计划成功后，波士顿等人继续先留在小行星上进行探查。但随后波士顿他们发现，该行星里暗藏着由外星文明所打造的通道及密室，而波士顿之后因意外启动了控制行星的装置，一行人被传送到不知名的星球上。
来到陌生星球上的波士顿一行人，之后便想着要如何设法离开回到地球的方法，以及试着解出此事件背后一切的谜团。
