魔誡發行於 1994 年，雖然只在前作的 1 年之後，但是卻有著質的提升，可控角色增加到 4 名，謎題設計上，主要還是前兩作的謎題改良型。天堂鳥於1997年代理並發售繁體中文版。
同時，本作也是主角亞雷斯故事的完結篇，雖然後面還有部小說呼び覚ます運命和廣播劇 Brandish Gaiden，但這些已經不屬於遊戲裡的內容了。
本作雖然繼續使用初代引擎，但是畫面卻在II 的基礎上進一步提高，特別是本作場景數量達到系列之最，冰穴、水底、洞穴、生物區域、熔岩地帶、城堡、熱帶雨林、鬼屋、 沙漠、海岸……還有一些叫不出名字的地方。 系統上就本質來說變化不大，畢竟這個系列後續作品只不過是在初代的基礎上不斷完善而已。 這次遊戲終於加入了異常狀態，不過除了毒稍微有點麻煩外其他的幾乎毫無威脅，快捷鍵也引入了遊戲系統，玩家在戰鬥時更能專心關注戰鬥了。 但要說最大的革新，那就是系列第一次可以選擇多個主角攻略，每個人優勢和擅長的武器都不一樣。 BOSS 戰在數量上本作可謂系列最多的一次，超過20 個以上的BOSS 完全可以讓你打得過足癮，還覺得不過癮的話還可以去遊戲裡的鬥技場挑戰，順利通過的話還有 個實力很強的隱藏BOSS 等玩家來挑戰。
