魔诫发行于 1994 年，虽然只在前作的 1 年之后，但是却有着质的提升，可控角色增加到 4 名，谜题设计上，主要还是前两作的谜题改良型。天堂鸟于1997年代理并发售繁体中文版。
同时，本作也是主角亚雷斯故事的完结篇，虽然后面还有部小说呼び覚ます运命和广播剧 Brandish Gaiden，但这些已经不属于游戏里的内容了。
本作虽然继续使用初代引擎，但是画面却在 II 的基础上进一步提高，特别是本作场景数量达到系列之最，冰穴、水底、洞穴、生物区域、熔岩地带、城堡、热带雨林、鬼屋、沙漠、海岸……还有一些叫不出名字的场所。系统上就本质来说变化不大，毕竟这个系列后续作品只不过是在初代的基础上不断完善而已。这次游戏终于加入了异常状态，不过除了毒稍微有点麻烦外其他的几乎毫无威胁，快捷键也引入了游戏系统，玩家在战斗时更能专心关注战斗了。但要说最大的革新，那就是系列第一次可以选择多个主角攻略，每个人优势和擅长的武器都不一样。BOSS 战在数量上本作可谓系列最多的一次，超过 20 个以上的 BOSS 完全可以让你打得过足瘾，还觉得不过瘾的话还可以去游戏里的斗技场挑战，顺利通过的话还有个实力很强的隐藏 BOSS 等玩家来挑战。
