「爆笑三国志」は、三国のキャラクターを主題としたボードゲームで、天下大乱、群雄割据、三国鼎立の3つの時代に分かれています。プレイヤーは各時代の定められた4人のキャラクターから1～4人を選択できます。ゲームの主なルールは、武将がいないときに中伏に遭ったり、金銭が尽きて武将を売却できない場合に敗北となるため、武将がこのゲームの最も重要な資産となります。武将の入手方法は、一部の突発イベントや策略を使用することによるものに加えて、主に購入によるもので、購入に必要な金銭の源は、固定された金銭の配布に加えて、占領した城池に関連しています。他のプレイヤーの城池に踏み入れると、通行料を支払う選択肢があり、または武将を指名して強制的に占領することも可能ですが、占領できるかどうかは武将の個々の能力によります。総じて、このゲームの勝敗の主要な要因は、武将の数にほぼ依存しており、運が悪く、一騎突撃や五関斬六将のような一度に多くの武将を失うイベントに遭遇すると、ほぼ敗北が確定します。一般的な大富豪ゲームとはいくつかの違いがあります。
