《異塵餘生》設定在一個虛構的未來中。玩家在該世界中的能到訪不同地點和不同的人物互動。部份人物會提出任務，而玩家完成任務就能獲得經驗值和可能的報酬。此遊戲能讓玩家以多種方式完成任務，而這些方式能是非傳統的，亦能違背任務的原意。無論玩家以什麼方式完成任務，都能獲得獎勵。玩家在遊戲中的行動會影響遊戲的劇情，甚至其結局。玩家在遊戲中亦會遇到敵對角色，而這時玩家就需要戰鬥。
