É o primeiro título da série Grand Theft Auto e foi lançado em novembro de 1997 para MS-DOS e Microsoft Windows, em dezembro de 1997 para PlayStation e em outubro de 1999 para Game Boy Color. A narrativa do jogo acompanha um criminoso que sobe de status no submundo do crime por três cidades fictícias inspiradas em locais reais.
