Witchaven

Witchaven combines dark fantasy, first-person melee combat, and dungeon exploration in a journey into a cursed island stronghold. You play Grondoval, a knight from Stazhia sent to confront the witch Illwhyrin on the Isle of Char. Beneath the island, she has established a labyrinthine refuge and is working to breach the barrier separating the human world from the chaotic Nether Reaches. With monstrous forces gathering around her, your mission is to penetrate the underground complex and reach the source of the threat before her power can spread. Steel takes the place of the firearms found in many first-person action games. Daggers, swords, axes, morning stars, and polearms form the backbone of your arsenal, while bows and magic offer alternatives at a distance. Fighting goblins, skeletons, ogres, and other creatures brings you close enough that positioning and attack reach matter. A narrow passage may help you control an encounter, but it can also leave you without room to retreat. Success depends on finding opportunities to strike without allowing enemies to surround you. Your equipment is not a permanent solution to every problem. Weapons wear down through use and can break, while armor loses protection as it absorbs damage. Finding a replacement blade or fresh armor therefore has an immediate practical value, even when you already possess stronger equipment. At the same time, defeating enemies and collecting certain objects earns experience, allowing Grondoval to advance in level and gain access to greater combat capabilities and more powerful spells. Progression makes you stronger without removing the need to maintain your supplies. Magic expands the adventure beyond straightforward swordplay. Scrolls provide offensive and controlling effects such as fireballs, freezing, and fear, alongside practical abilities including night vision, flight, and opening locked doors. Potions can restore health, cure poison, enhance strength, grant invisibility, or protect against fire. These resources can change how you approach a dangerous room or environmental obstacle. Spending a powerful spell to get through an immediate threat may be worthwhile, but saving it for an uncertain stretch ahead can be equally important. Exploration takes you through caves, crypts, stone corridors, lava-filled areas, and secret chambers. Progress requires searching for keys, operating mechanisms, and understanding the layout rather than simply defeating every enemy in sight. Treasure chests may offer valuable rewards or conceal danger, while overlooked passages can contain equipment and magical supplies. Remembering an unopened door, checking an unexplored corner, and planning a route through hazardous terrain all contribute to the sense of pushing deeper into a hostile place. Built with the Build engine, Witchaven presents its fantasy world through dark environments, grotesque creatures, close-up weapon animations, and bloody combat. Its focus is not an expansive social world or a web of branching quests, but the immediate challenge of surviving a dangerous labyrinth with limited equipment and magic.
