Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance (1996)
Capstone Software

Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance continues Grondoval’s story with another journey through a hostile world of steel, sorcery, and sinister strongholds. Returning home after defeating the witch on the Isle of Char, the knight is welcomed with celebration. By morning, that triumph has turned into an unsettling silence: his countrymen have disappeared, and the homeland he fought to protect stands deserted. Cirae-Argoth, sister of the slain witch, is seeking revenge. Grondoval must take up his weapons once more and search for the missing people before her vengeance can run its course.
Close-range fighting remains central, but the sequel introduces additional choices between protection and aggression. Shields can accompany one-handed weapons, while certain equipment combinations allow extra attacks with a second weapon. With a broadsword selected and the appropriate conditions met, a dagger or morning star can supplement your strikes when the shield is not in use. This is a specific combination system rather than unrestricted dual wielding. Choosing a shield, a paired attack, or a longer-reaching heavy weapon changes how you approach crowded rooms and narrow passages.
Enchantment adds another layer to the arsenal. Magical wells can strengthen weapons, turning ordinary equipment into more dangerous tools with enhanced damage or special effects. Flaming arrows and blades capable of freezing opponents bring sorcery directly into physical combat. These advantages are limited, however, and weapons can still wear out or break. Experience gained through fighting and collecting treasure improves Grondoval’s capabilities, but character growth does not remove the need to maintain armor, find replacement equipment, and keep useful supplies in reserve.
The fifteen-level campaign leads through forests, crypts, fortifications, and imposing stone interiors. Arches, sloping surfaces, stairs, and concealed routes make the environment something to investigate as well as survive. Keys, secrets, pentagram items, and exits shape your progress through each area. Alongside familiar monsters, armed warriors bring shields, hammers, bows, and spells into encounters. Closing the distance on one opponent may expose you to another, making retreat routes and nearby hazards important considerations during a fight.
Scrolls and potions create alternatives when weapons alone are not enough. Offensive magic can freeze or destroy enemies, while night vision, flight, and door-opening spells assist exploration. Potions offer healing, poison cures, increased strength, invisibility, and protection from fire. Because these resources must be collected and conserved, their value depends on the situation. Spending a spell to escape an immediate threat can be sensible, but finding a safer approach may leave you better prepared for whatever lies beyond the next doorway.
Dark medieval environments, prominent weapon animations, and bloody encounters give Blood Vengeance its rough-edged fantasy atmosphere. The original release also included network battles and a level editor, extending play beyond the campaign into competition and custom construction. Its focus remains direct: navigate dangerous spaces, choose the right equipment, and survive through a mixture of fighting and preparation. For players who enjoy classic first-person action and exploratory dungeon adventures, the sequel expands the original formula with shields, paired attacks, and enchanted weapons without abandoning its emphasis on close, threatening encounters.
