『アーミーメン（Army Men）』は 1998 年に 3DO が送り出したリアルタイムタクティクスで、緑とタン（茶色）のプラスチック兵士たちの戦争を“本気の作戦行動”として描くのが持ち味です。舞台は砂漠・雪原・湿地といったエリアに分かれ、任務は偵察や破壊、制圧などの目的を順にこなしていく形で進行します。中心になるのはグリーン軍の Sarge で、彼を軸に小隊を動かしながら、地形と射線を読みつつ前線を押し上げていく感覚が強い作品です。
映像演出として、モノクロの戦時ニュース映像のようなカットが挟まる点も特徴で、玩具らしい世界観に“戦記もの”の空気を重ねています。可愛さよりも「小さな戦場をどう突破するか」という手触りに寄った作りなので、派手なアクションというより、手堅く部隊を前に出すのが楽しいタイプです。
