『アーミーメン：サージズ・ヒーローズ』は、1999 年に登場した『Army Men』シリーズの中でも、キャラクター性とアクション性を強く打ち出した一本です。従来作の“プラスチック兵士どうしの戦争”という発想はそのままに、今回は Sarge を中心とした前進型のミッション構成になっており、プレイヤーはより近い視点で戦場を突破していくことになります。小さな兵士の目線で見ることで、日常の物や空間が巨大で危険な戦域へ変わって見える感覚が、この作品の魅力をとても強くしています。
ゲームとしては第三者視点の 3D アクションシューティング色が濃く、遮蔽物、射線、位置取りを意識しながらステージを押し進めていくスタイルです。Sarge、Colonel Grimm、Vikki、Plastro など、後のシリーズでも印象を残す主要キャラクターがこの作品で前面に出てきたことも大きく、さらにプラスチック世界と人間世界をつなぐポータルの存在によって、シリーズ全体のスケール感も一段広がりました。発売はまず Nintendo 64 版が先行し、その後 PlayStation、Dreamcast、Windows へ展開されています。
