『アーミーメン：トイズ・イン・スペース』は、1999 年に Windows 向けに発売された『Army Men』シリーズの一作で、The 3DO Company が開発・発売を担当した。シリーズ前半の魅力である“プラスチック兵士たちの本気の戦争ごっこ”はそのままに、本作ではそこへ宇宙SFのモチーフが一気に持ち込まれ、作品全体の空気がぐっと派手でカラフルなものになっている。
面白いのは、玩具らしいミニチュア戦場の感覚が失われていないことだ。プレイヤーは今回も Sarge を中心に任務を進めるが、相手は従来のタン軍だけではなく、Tina Tomorrow や Space Troopers、さらに外星系の勢力まで絡んでくる。武器にも冷凍系やレーザー系のものが入り、舞台もバスルーム、砂場、裏庭のピクニック空間から、より宇宙的な都市やフィールドへ広がっていく。そのため、本作はシリーズの中でも特に“子どもの玩具箱がそのままSF戦争になった”ような独特の楽しさが強い。
プレイ感そのものは、シリーズ初期らしい見下ろし型のリアルタイム戦術／アクション寄りだが、内容面は前二作より少し膨らんでいる。シングルキャンペーンだけでなく、AI 相手やオンラインで遊べるスカーミッシュも用意され、タレットやトーチカ、地雷、さらには外星系ユニットを絡めた局面づくりも可能になった。題材はかなり大胆に寄り道しているのに、遊びの密度はむしろ増している──そこが『トイズ・イン・スペース』の面白さだ。
