『アーミーメン：ワールドウォー』は、『Army Men』シリーズの“玩具の戦争”という発想をそのままに、よりはっきりと世界大戦モチーフへ寄せた作品です。小さなプラスチック兵士が戦うという基本の面白さは変わらないのに、舞台は海岸、ジャングル、田園地帯、そして戦火に包まれた都市へと広がり、全体の空気は従来作よりずっと“戦場らしい”ものになっています。子どもの玩具箱の延長線上にありながら、やっていることは本格的な前線突破戦に近い――そのギャップが、この作品のいちばん印象的なところです。
内容面でも、シリーズ前半の中ではかなりスケール感があります。全 16 ミッションを通して、拳銃やバズーカ、火炎放射器などの武器を使い分け、必要に応じて戦車、ジープ、ボートも活用しながら戦線を押し上げていく構成になっており、単なる小競り合いではなく、段階的に戦場を攻略していく感覚が強いです。さらに、Windows 版はリアルタイムタクティクス寄り、PlayStation 版はサードパーソンシューティング寄りと、同じタイトルでも遊びの質感がかなり違う点も特徴的です。
