《三國志III》是光榮《三國志》系列裡極具代表性的一部作品，也是許多老玩家特別熟悉的經典歷史模擬／策略遊戲。作品以東漢末年群雄割據的局勢為舞台，玩家可從不同劇本中選擇勢力，透過內政建設、人才登用、外交操作與軍事征戰，一步步擴張版圖，朝統一天下的目標前進。相較於前作，本作把遊戲核心更明確地轉向對各大都市的經營與爭奪，不僅讓治理層面的存在感更強，也讓整體節奏更貼近“經國治軍”的歷史模擬感。同時，武將數值與職能分工變得更細，陸戰、水戰、政治與魅力等能力都會直接影響實際表現；戰場上又加入士氣、時間、天候等條件，使得戰局變化更加豐富。也因為這些改良，《三國志III》常被視為系列早期逐漸成熟的重要里程碑。
