『三國志IV』は、コーエーの歴史シミュレーションシリーズの中でも、初期作品の完成度を大きく高めた代表作のひとつです。舞台は後漢末から三国時代にかけての中国で、プレイヤーは各勢力の君主となり、都市運営、人材登用、外交、軍事行動を通じて全国統一を目指します。本作の大きな魅力は、武将ごとの個性がより明確になった点にあります。公式のシリーズ史でも、約450名の武将、武将固有の「特性」、家臣の意見を聞く「評定」、さらに外交要素としての辺境異民族の登場が強調されています。戦闘面でも、城内での最終決戦や、衝車・発石車といった兵器を用いた攻城戦が加わり、戦略の幅が広がりました。シリーズ初期の魅力を保ちながら、遊び応えを大きく伸ばした作品として高く評価されています。
