《三國志VI》是光榮《三國志》系列中相當關鍵的一部作品，不只是系列第六代，更是正傳首次以 Windows 平台作為起點推出的作品，因此在操作介面、資訊呈現與整體節奏上，都能感受到系列邁入新世代電腦環境的轉變。遊戲同樣以東漢末年至三國時代的亂世為舞台，玩家需扮演君主，透過都市經營、人才任用、外交折衝與軍事征伐，逐步擴張勢力並完成統一大業。本作最具代表性的地方，在於它把 「天時、地利、人和」 明確塑造成遊戲核心：帶有戲劇張力的歷史事件構成「天時」，城池位置、農業、交易與地理條件形成「地利」，而武將各自的理念、夢想與主張則構成「人和」，使整體用人與君臣互動比前幾作更有個性。戰鬥方面，本作著名的 「同時プロット制」 也就是雙方先同時規劃指令、再同步展開行動的設計，大幅提升了戰場上的預測性與心理博弈感。整體而言，《三國志VI》不只是一次續作更新，更像是系列在系統表現與敘事氛圍上的一次重要進化。
