『三國志VIII』は、コーエーの『三國志』シリーズの中でも、とりわけ武将同士の関係性や人間ドラマを強く打ち出した作品として知られています。舞台は後漢末から三国時代にかけての中国で、プレイヤーは内政、外交、人材登用、軍事行動を重ねながら勢力の発展と天下統一を目指しますが、本作の魅力は単なる領土拡大だけにとどまりません。公式のシリーズ史では、総勢650人以上の武将、51年分にわたるシナリオ、そして新たに強調された「軍団長」や「放浪軍」といった立場が紹介されており、これだけでも本作が非常に幅広い人物劇を意識して作られていることが分かります。さらに、義兄弟、好敵手、宿敵、結婚といった人間関係がシステムとして表現されているため、プレイ感覚は単なる国家経営ではなく、多くの武将たちの運命が絡み合う群像劇に近いものになります。戦闘では「戦法」が導入され、策を巡らせる面白さと実戦での駆け引きがより濃くなりました。後年の公式リメイクサイトでも、本作の魅力は“武将ドラマ”の大きさとして打ち出されており、『三國志VIII』がシリーズの中でも特に人間関係の濃さで記憶される一作であることがよく表れています。
