《大航海時代外傳》是光榮《大航海時代》系列中的外傳作品，整體玩法明顯承接《大航海時代II》的系統基礎，因此玩家依然能體驗到系列最經典的魅力：率領船隊遠航、往返各地港口進行交易、招募航海士、探索世界、發現遺跡與寶物，並在危險海域中與敵對勢力進行海戰。與《大航海時代II》相比，本作沒有再增加主角數量，反而把可選主角縮減為兩位，但也因此讓每條故事線都寫得更集中、更有角色感。從系列相關資料與後續官方英文角色介紹來看，本作兩位主角的定位非常鮮明：米蘭達是一位來自熱那亞、因誤把彼耶特羅童年的一句話當成求婚而踏上海途的少女；薩爾瓦多則是海盜名門之子，希望擺脫父親的巨大名聲，走出屬於自己的航海道路。也正因如此，《大航海時代外傳》玩起來不像《II》那麼偏向多路線的大型開放冒險，反而更像是一部以成熟航海系統為基底、但更強調角色故事與旅程戲劇性的外傳作品，既保留了系列一貫的海洋浪漫，也讓玩家更容易投入兩位主角各自的人生與命運。
