《太阁立志传3》是光荣“太阁立志传”系列的第三部作品，主题依然围绕丰臣秀吉在战国乱世中的出世之路展开。和前两作相比，这一代最鲜明的特点不是单纯扩张自由度，而是明显加强了“剧情主导”的体验方式：公开资料显示，本作可操作角色被大幅收束为秀吉与另一名虚构人物，因此整个流程比起系列中更自由的作品，更像是一段被精心安排过的战国立志剧。与此同时，本作在系统和表现上也做了不小调整，角色改为更具动画感的立绘风格，武将能力则分成军事、内政、外交和魅力四大项，并辅以 12 种技能来强化成长与分工；战斗则分为野战和攻城战两种主要形式。也正因为这些变化，《太阁立志传3》给人的感觉并不是最开放的一代，却是一部更强调人物、剧情推进和时代戏剧感的特殊作品，在系列里有相当鲜明的辨识度。
