《玩具兵大战：世界大战》把《Army Men》系列原本就很鲜明的“塑料兵人战争”进一步往“经典战争片”方向推进：战场不再只是抽象的后院冲突，而是明显借用了二战式海滩、丛林、乡间与战火城市这些更有历史联想的场景，让整部作品带上一种玩具世界模仿真实大战役的味道。你带着绿色军一路推进，会不断遇到更密集的火力线、更大的战场空间，以及更像正面战区而不是小规模遭遇战的局面；那种“明明是塑料兵，却在打一场缩尺世界大战”的反差感，正是它最有记忆点的地方。Windows 版与 PlayStation 版的取向也并不完全一样：前者更接近即时战术推进，后者则更偏第三人称射击。
这一作的节奏比系列前几部更强调正面推进与战场支援。关卡数量达到 16 个，过程中不只是拿轻武器硬顶，你还会接触到火焰喷射器、火箭筒之类更重火力的装备，并在需要时借助坦克、吉普与船只等载具来打开局面；中文资料也提到，你还能利用空中火力支援、空中侦察和伞兵空降来加强绿军推进。于是它给人的感觉，不再只是“带一小队闯关”，而更像在一个玩具化的大战场里不断压前线、拆防线、把局势一点点推向己方。
