《玩具兵大戰：世界大戰》很像是把系列的童趣外殼，套進一部微縮比例的戰爭電影裡。它依然保有《Army Men》那種“小小塑膠兵在巨大世界作戰”的招牌反差，但這次的關卡氛圍明顯更接近世界大戰主題：海灘登陸、叢林推進、鄉間據點與滿目瘡痍的城市戰區，都讓整體氣質比前幾作更厚重，也更有“全面戰線”而不是零散遭遇戰的感覺。這種設計讓遊戲雖然仍是玩具兵題材，卻多了一層對經典戰爭敘事的模仿與轉化。
它玩起來的重點，在於如何把前線穩穩往前推。武器配置不只限於基礎槍械，還會逐步接觸到更強的火力與更多樣的戰場工具；某些情況下，坦克、吉普車、船艇這些載具會讓局面從僵持變成突破，而中文資料提到的空中支援、空中偵察與傘兵空降，也讓整體作戰感比系列早期更有“聯合作戰”的味道。Windows 版與 PlayStation 版的核心視角與手感也不同，前者偏即時戰術，後者則更像主機取向的第三人稱射擊，這也讓它成為系列裡相當特別的一作。
