《裝甲騎兵：黃金版》可以視為初代《裝甲騎兵》最完整、也最方便回顧的一個整合版本。作品以第二次世界大戰為背景，但和傳統即時戰略遊戲不同，它並不把重心放在採集資源與基地建設，而是更強調戰術層面的兵力調度、視野掌握、地形運用與火力配置。玩家要在大型戰場上指揮步兵、戰車、火砲與航空支援，透過推進、防禦、包抄與壓制來打開戰局，因此玩起來更像是在指揮一場接一場的真實戰術作戰，而不是經營一個生產體系。現代 Steam 版也明確標出，這個 Gold 版本包含 原版《Sudden Strike》、擴充內容《Sudden Strike Forever》，以及 “Total War” 地圖包，所以它本質上是一個把初代內容完整打包的版本。商店頁同時提到，本作具有單張關卡可達 1000 單位的大規模戰鬥、超大型地圖、可破壞地形、築工事與架設浮橋，以及地圖編輯器等特色。也因為這些要素，《裝甲騎兵：黃金版》至今仍常被視為二戰即時戰術遊戲中非常有代表性的經典之一。
