Daikōkai Jidai: Gaiden (Japanese) (1998)
KOEI
Play

Daikōkai Jidai: Gaiden is a seafaring adventure-simulation spin-off in Koei’s Daikoukai Jidai / Uncharted Waters series. It builds directly on the world and core mechanics of Daikoukai Jidai II, keeping the familiar loop of sailing, trading, exploring, recruiting crew, and fighting at sea, but reshaping the experience around a more concentrated story structure. Compared with II, the number of protagonists was reduced from six to two, yet the narrative for each route became more developed and character-focused. One route follows Miranda, a Genoese young woman who heads out to sea in pursuit of Pietro Conti after mistaking his childhood remark for a proposal, while the other follows Salvador, the son of the great pirate Hayreddin Leis, who wants to step out of his father’s shadow and find his own place on the seas. Because of that structure, the game feels less like a broad multi-route sandbox than II, and more like a story-rich companion piece that keeps the series’ romance of navigation, discovery, commerce, and naval danger while giving the player two more personal adventures to live through.
