Darkstone (1999)
Delphine Software

Darkstone combines real-time combat, character development, and randomized dungeon exploration in a world threatened by sorcery and a dragon’s power. Across the land of Uma, the fallen monk Draak spreads destruction after embracing the forces of darkness. Your journey takes you beyond the safety of town, through wilderness, underground passages, and hostile strongholds in search of seven ancient crystals. Finding them means more than following a road toward a distant villain: the troubles of local inhabitants, missing objects, and mysterious obstacles all become part of the adventure.
Eight male and female character options are organized around four broad classes: warrior, wizard, thief, and monk. Their differing strengths and special abilities provide starting points for close combat, ranged attacks, and magical approaches. Experience allows you to develop attributes, learn skills, and make use of more capable equipment. The initial choice establishes a character’s tendencies, but the decisions that follow—what to improve, which weapons to keep, and which abilities to develop—give your adventurer a more individual identity.
One of the original PC game’s defining features is the option to take two characters into a single-player adventure. You directly control one while the computer manages the companion, and you can switch between them whenever needed. This creates opportunities to combine complementary strengths rather than commit the entire journey to one fighting style. A close-range combatant can be supported by a partner using missiles or magic, while each character maintains separate equipment and development. An item that offers little to your current hero may prove valuable to the other.
Combat unfolds in a fully 3D world with a camera that can be rotated and zoomed. Movement, attacks, spellcasting, and potion use must be managed as encounters develop, whether you are crossing an exposed outdoor area or navigating a cramped passage. Adjusting the view helps reveal routes and keep track of opponents and companions. Between battles, the environment continues to invite investigation. A chest, an unexplored doorway, or a branching corridor can provide the next useful discovery—or lead you into another dangerous encounter.
Randomized dungeons, quest selections, and treasure give subsequent adventures room to differ. The search for the crystals remains the central objective, but the tasks and discoveries along the way can change. Some situations ask you to speak with inhabitants, retrieve particular objects, or work out how a mechanism functions rather than simply defeat every creature nearby. Loot provides its own continuing set of decisions: compare an unfamiliar weapon, distribute equipment between companions, or sell what you no longer need to fund the next improvement.
Town serves as a place to repair, resupply, train, and prepare before returning to danger. Food matters alongside health and mana, making provisions part of your planning rather than an incidental detail. Higher difficulties and PC multiplayer cooperation provide further ways to continue the journey as your characters develop. By bringing paired adventurers, changing quests, and equipment progression together, Darkstone creates an accessible cycle of preparation and discovery: venture farther, return stronger, and gradually turn an inexperienced expedition into a force capable of confronting the darkness.
