Myth II: Chimera (1998)
Bungie

Myth II: Chimera returns to the world of Myth ten years after Soulblighter’s defeat, when an uneasy peace is disturbed by visions of another approaching evil. Four Bear Silent Oak sees skeletal armies, scenes of death, and a mysterious woman wielding a powerful token. Convinced that these images are more than memories of war, he leaves behind the safety of familiar surroundings to seek his former companions. The warrior Fenris and the archer ne’Ric become central to an expedition that draws old allies back into danger.
Rather than charting another continent-wide military campaign, Chimera focuses on a smaller group of characters connected by their past. Their journey leads through forests, ancient tombs, graveyards, coastal positions, and hostile strongholds. Finding allies, joining reinforcements, surviving ambushes, and overcoming defended approaches give the missions different demands. Briefings and conversations connect these encounters, allowing the unfolding investigation to remain close to the people undertaking it.
The tactical foundation remains the series’ emphasis on limited forces. There are no resources to harvest or barracks producing an endless stream of replacements. You must accomplish each objective with the troops made available, combining the strengths of melee fighters, archers, and explosive-throwing dwarves. An engagement that costs too many soldiers may leave you unable to survive the next one. Choosing where to fight, keeping a withdrawal route open, and preserving valuable specialists matter as much as destroying the enemy in front of you.
The principal heroes provide distinct roles around which to organize the force. Fenris brings close-combat strength, Four Bear keeps wounded allies fighting through healing, and ne’Ric contributes powerful ranged attacks. Their abilities are most useful when they support one another rather than operate in isolation. Returning fir’Bolg archers add a special poisoned arrow capable of temporarily stunning an enemy, creating opportunities to interrupt a threat, concentrate attacks, or buy time for a retreat. Strong individual units expand your options without removing the need for careful command.
Terrain and firing angles make every formation a practical decision. Slopes, waterways, narrow entrances, and trees shape movement and the space available for an engagement. Projectiles and explosions also threaten friendly soldiers, so firing into a crowded melee can do more harm than good. Spacing troops, weakening an approaching force before committing your fighters, and redirecting support as an attack changes direction help turn a difficult encounter into a manageable one. Success depends not simply on possessing the right units, but on using them in the right order.
Across eight campaign missions, new characters, maps, dialogue, and music give this expedition its own identity within the larger series. Its expansion of the original formula lies in more personal storytelling and tightly coordinated battles, not a broader economic system. Each successful withdrawal, protected healer, and carefully timed attack helps carry the party farther into hostile territory. Chimera turns a small force into the center of a dark fantasy adventure, where the satisfaction comes from keeping companions alive and overcoming danger through judgment rather than numbers.
