Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (Japanese) (1995)

Play

Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire is widely regarded as one of the defining early entries in Koei’s historical strategy lineage. Set in the age of competing warlords from the late Han to the Three Kingdoms period, the game asks players to assume the role of a ruler and pursue unification through domestic policy, diplomacy, officer management, and war. What made this entry especially notable was the stronger sense of character among officers: individual special traits became more prominent, council-style discussions were introduced, and frontier tribes appeared as a diplomatic factor. Battles also gained more spectacle and variety through castle finales and siege weapons such as battering rams and catapults. Because of this balance between accessibility and strategic depth, the game is often remembered as one of the most polished forms of the series’ early city-and-ruler design.
