Sangokushi Sōsōden é o quinto lançamento da série de RPG tático Eiketsuden desenvolvida pela Koei, e o terceiro ambientado no período dos Três Reinos.
O jogo reconta os feitos do antigo senhor da guerra chinês Cao Cao. Os eventos se baseiam nos retratados no romance histórico dramático de Luo Guanzhong, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. A própria obra se baseia nas batalhas e eventos históricos reais do período dos Três Reinos da China antiga.
Embora Cao Cao seja retratado como vilão no romance, ele é na verdade o protagonista de Sangokushi Sousouden. Assim, os atos negativos atribuídos a Cao no romance são alterados para retratá-lo de forma mais positiva ou simplesmente removidos por completo. Três personagens adversários proeminentes do romance, Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang e Sun Quan, são os principais oponentes de Cao Cao no jogo. Os retratos de personagens nesta versão são, em sua maioria, recriações aprimoradas e com paletas alteradas daqueles usados nos jogos anteriores Sangokushi Eiketsuden e Sangokushi Koumeiden, com a única exceção de Cao Cao, que tem aparência única; porém, o relançamento mobile posteriormente daria a todos aparências redesenhadas.
