Sub Culture is a 3D submarine action-adventure and trading simulation developed by Criterion Studios and published by UBI Soft in 1997 for Windows.
The game is set in a miniature underwater world, the result of a catastrophic asteroid impact that shrank human civilization into a microscopic scale. In this post-apocalyptic aquatic environment, players control a small personal submarine, engaging in exploration, commerce, combat, and diplomacy.
A key feature of the game is the ongoing conflict between two rival factions, the Boiler faction and the Procha faction. Players must choose how to interact with these groups—trading, allying, or provoking conflict—while attempting to survive and thrive in the harsh marine ecosystem.
Gameplay involves scavenging wrecks, mining resources, and trading goods across underwater settlements. Missions include escorting convoys, eliminating pirates, and recovering valuable items, all while upgrading the submarine with new weapons, armor, and gadgets.
Graphically, Sub Culture was praised for its fully 3D rendered environments, including coral reefs, deep-sea trenches, and sunken wrecks, creating a vibrant and immersive undersea world. Its mix of free exploration, faction-based politics, and tactical submarine combat gave it a cult following despite its niche release.
