Uncharted Waters: New Horizons (Japanese) (2002)
KOEI

Play

Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is one of the most iconic entries in Koei’s seafaring adventure series and a landmark game of the Age of Discovery theme. Set in early 16th-century Europe and beyond, it lets players choose from six protagonists, each with a different nationality, background, ambition, and path through the world. Rather than forcing a single style of play, the game blends exploration, long-distance trade, naval battles, recruitment, treasure hunting, and geographical discovery into a broad “live your own voyage” structure. Koei’s official series history highlights three different fame paths at the center of the experience: Adventure Fame earned by discovering ruins and wonders, Pirate Fame earned through naval victories, and Trade Fame earned through buying and selling goods. Because these systems support very different playstyles, the game feels less like a linear RPG and more like a personal maritime life simulation, where the player can become an explorer, merchant, privateer, or some mixture of all three. That mix of freedom, atmosphere, and historical-romantic charm is a major reason why this title is still remembered as one of the defining classics of oceanic adventure gaming.
