Unreal Tournament

In 2341, the Liandri Mining Corporation has a place for you in its professional league. Fifty years ago, the New Earth Government legalized unrestricted combat to curb violence among deep-space miners. Liandri put those fights in front of paying crowds and discovered a business more profitable than mining. Now fighters from across known space compete for the championship. Your invitation gets you onto the tournament ladder. Staying there is up to you. An arena reveals itself a little at a time. On your first visit, the lift is simply a way to reach the weapon on the floor above. A few matches later, the sound of its motor tells you exactly where to aim a rocket. Weapons, armour and health give everyone a reason to revisit the same places. Once you know the routes between them, a missing pickup can tell you almost as much about an opponent as catching sight of them across a room. The weapons reward that kind of anticipation. The Shock Rifle fires both an instant beam and a slow-moving ball of energy. Send the ball drifting through a doorway, then hit it with the beam as a pursuer comes through. You choose where the explosion happens. The Flak Cannon packs hot shrapnel into a devastating close-range blast, while its alternate trigger lobs an explosive shell onto a lower platform. Moving a fight from a corridor to a stairwell can change which trigger you want under your finger. Team games give you reasons to let an opponent escape. In Domination, holding a control point keeps the score ticking while a chase might cost you the position. In Assault, the teams trade places and race against the first side’s completion time. Aboard the speeding train in HiSpeed, a defender who holds a carriage door for a few extra seconds can make all the difference when the teams switch ends. Then there is Facing Worlds. Two towers stand at opposite ends of a turning asteroid, each with a flag to steal and a clear view of the way home. A Translocator can get you into the enemy base in a hurry, but using it with the flag in hand makes you drop it. Suddenly the most important player on the map is the teammate who can keep a sniper busy while you cross the ridge. Call on computer-controlled teammates to attack, defend or cover you in the solo tournament, or take those same roles with friends over a LAN or online.
