車の事故で意識を失った男が、包帯で顔を覆われた状態で昏睡から目覚めると、彼は荒廃したサニタリウムに入院しており、自分が誰であるか、どこから来たのか、そしてどうしてここにいるのかを思い出せないことに気づきます。彼の仲間の入院患者たちは、彼を「マックス」と呼んでいるようです。
