「ハート・オブ・ダークネス」は、エリック・シャヒの前作「アナザー・ワールド」に似たシネマティックプラットフォーマーです。プレイヤーはアンディを操作し、彼の犬ウィスキーを探す過程で様々な危険に直面します。プレイヤーは、悪の影や飢えた野生動物、危険な障害物からアンディを守りながら、さまざまな環境を移動し、パズルを解くことで、ゲームの直線的なストーリーを進めます。基本的な動き（走る、ジャンプする、登る）に加え、ゲームの特定のセクションではアンディに追加の能力が与えられます。プラズマキャノンを使用すると、アンディは影を消滅させるために稲妻を発射することができます。また、特別な力は敵に対して攻撃的に使用できるだけでなく、種から生まれた木を成長させたり破壊したりするためにも使用できます。プレイヤーは無限の試行ができ、アンディが死亡すると最新のチェックポイントに戻ります。
